Staycation Unit - College & Career Awareness
There are of course a million ways to do the Staycation unit. But I thought I'd share how I do it and give you my materials in case you would like to use my version. THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED AS OF NOVEMBER, 2018!
- Assign students to groups of 3 or 4
- Each group chooses a location in Utah
- Each group creates 3 ads to advertise the location. (Groups of 3 do 2)
- Group presents one of the three to the class in a presentation
- Students fill out a group evaluation for grading
- Students earn points & money—the money is used for the final auction.
Note: The grading sheet is a little complicated but also awesome. The sheet is designed to grade ONE class, so if you have more than one class, you will need a copy of it for each. When you enter the names of the students by group on the first sheet, those names will filter through to the rest of the grading. The second sheet allows you to grade for all the portions of the Unit--the packet, ads, presentation, and their group evaluation score. It will calculate not just their final points but how much KASH they make as well. On the final grades tab, all students are listed with their group and individual score, and their final money. Just sort it and you can easily enter it into your grade book. I score everything on a scale of 1-4--you may need to adjust this for your own needs.
The group Evaluation is done the very last day of the unit. I make a copy for each group with the names already entered. The students open up the one for their group and navigate to the page with their name on it. They score each student, including themselves, on a scale of 0-4. Before making this file available, make sure to hide the totals sheet. Then when you grade it, unhide it.
