This section focuses on improvements I have made to the 19 Career Development Lessons provided by the state of Utah for CTE Intro classes. If you do not teach in Utah, this might not make a lot of sense to you!
Pathway Lesson for Orientation
This year I started an activity that I do with my students on the first day as an orientation each quarter. I put up eight different pictures all over the room. Each picture symbolizes one of the eight pathways. When the students come in that day, I greet them at the door with a bunch of magnets. (I have a badge-making machine, as you will see in my Simulation, and I made magnet badges for this activity. You could just use peices of paper) Each magnet has an occupation on it. The kids take that magnet and sit down.
I instruct them to set it asside for the moment, and look at the pictures on the wall. I tell them to choose the one that they relate to most. The pictures I have are:
Saddle - Agriculture
House - FACS
Pile of Money - Business
Hard Hat - Technology & Engineering
Stethoscope - Health Science
TV - Marketing
Computer - Information Technology
Wrench - Skilled and Technical Sciences

After the students have chosen where they will go, I go around and ask them why they picked what they did. Then I have them sit back down, and one by one I gather each picture and flip it over to reveal the pathway name on the back. we talk about each pathway and the types of jobs you would find in it. I put them up, spaced evenly, on my white board.
Then I invite students to come up and put their magnet under which pathway they think it belongs in. If it have leftover magnets (there are 40) I have some students place more than one. Then we go over each pathway again, correcting each job and discussing why they belong in each category. I have added a zip file that has the pictures and titles for all eight pathways as well.
Lesson 1 - Wish List
I created this wish list power point--SO much easier than the packet! I updated it last in November 2012, and the houses pictures are ACTUAL houses for sale in Utah with their sale price. Also included is a replacement Excel file for Lesson 4--much easier to do the math on Excel than on the paper provided. This was created by Bill Simpson
Lesson 7 - Personalities
So yes, I know this is the counselor lesson. They introduce the six personality types--Doer, Thinker, Creator, Persuader, and Organizer. I use these personality types in determining my student's groups for the Simulation, so I have created an online quiz that I give my students that helps them determine their personality type. I use it to sort my kids into groups for my Badge Builder Simulation. You are welcome to use it!
Lesson 10 - Big Points Game
I found the "cards" for this game, Big Points, very hard to deal with in the files given by the State, so I made my own. They are in PDF format--just print them on one side of cardstock paper, then print one of the CardBacks on the other side. They should slice evenly, unlike the ones the State provides. Then laminate and you are done! I REALLY love playing this game with my kids--its kind of a pain to get them started, but they end up loving it!
Lesson 11 - Utah Futures
The Utah Futures website has recently changed, and so it got very confusing how to do this lesson! I have created a new worksheet for it that will guide students through the process. They will look at seven different careers in their interest area, and look up the level of education required, job outlook, and salary. The new site still has them do an interest survey (though its a bit shorter) but the results page looks quite different.
Lesson 13 -
I also made some cards for activity 13. I laminated and keep them in a labeled manilla envelope with magnets so they are easy and quick to use.
